The Social and Culture Centre |
This historic building, commonly known as the Old Poorhouse, is located on top of the Venetian walls next to Famagusta Gate, and is considered to be part of the Famagusta Gate complex. It is adjoined to the west by part of the old aqueduct of the city, which dates back to the 18th century. This building, consisting of two oblong single-storey structures with gabled roofs, and follows the line of the city walls. It consists of several small rooms opening on to a veranda which runs the full length of the building.
The building is being restored as part of the Nicosia Master Plan. The aim of the restoration of the Old Poorhouse is to create the infrastructure for the provision of modern social and cultural services to vulnerable groups and the wider community. The operation of the Centre and the programmes it offers greatly contribute to the upgrading of municipal social services and improving the quality of life of the residents, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable groups such as old people and young immigrants.
The restoration has highlighted a historic building of the capital and demonstrated that traditional and modern can co-exist.
